NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank

2026 Recipient

"Sharing the health, one baby at a time."

Right here in Calgary, NorthernStar Mothers Milk Bank is giving fragile newborns the most
powerful gift of all — a safe, healthy start to life.

For premature and critically ill infants, donor human milk is more than nourishment — it is
medicine. Human milk protects against life-threatening infections, strengthens immunity, and
helps the tiniest babies grow stronger. When a mother’s own milk is not available, NorthernStar
steps in to ensure no baby goes without this essential resource.

From our Calgary facility, NorthernStar carefully screens, pasteurizes, and distributes donor milk
to hospitals across Alberta and Western Canada. Each year, over 250 Calgary mothers donate
more than 6200 litres of milk, nourishing thousands of vulnerable babies in local neonatal
intensive care units.

But the need is growing. Our milk processing lab — the heart of our operations — is aging and
no longer meets the demands of a growing community. To continue serving Calgary families and
expand access, NorthernStar urgently needs a modernized lab and plant with expanded capacity,
improved safety systems, and cutting-edge technology.

"Each year, over 250 Calgary mothers donate more than 6200 litres of milk."

  • 250 Calgary donors supported annually
  • 8800 litres of donor milk processed in Calgary each year
  • Over 10,000 babies in Alberta hospitals nourished by donor milk last year
  • A new modernized lab/plant will double our capacity and ensure that every Calgary baby
who needs donor milk receives it

Supporting NorthernStar is about more than milk — it’s about health equity, food security, and
the future of Calgary’s most vulnerable children. With your help, we can build the future of milk
banking in Calgary and give every fragile newborn the best possible start in life.
